Back in the day when MTV was music videos...

Monday, May 2, 2011

Remember?  There was a time when MTV was actually musical television.  Imagine that.  How many hours of the day (that aren't between midnight and 6 am) are actually music on MTV these days?  I guess music on MTV went out with the family dinner and people living within their means?  I don't know.  Anyway, beyond the fact that it was actually music, it was also videos that didn't force my Mom to fear I'd sell my soul to the nearest pimp daddy on the corner if I was watching it.  It was actually somewhat wholesome.  Weird, huh?!

This one was my faaaavorite when I was in like third grade (when Gloria Estefan was actually good).
Anyone else have a favorite early 90s song?

  6. Seriously, I miss the music videos. Now I see more of them on VH1 than MTV. It's crazy to see how much it's changed! But I'd be lying if I said I didn't get heavily addicted to Teen Mom 2. Shameful, but glorious.

  7. Agreed. I miss those days! If there are any good music videos these days, I never end up seeing them! Videos used to tell a story or have some sort of artistic value. Now it's just a chance for the "artist" to show off their bodies and sweet dance moves.

  8. I wasn't big on MTV as a kid, but my sister and I would lay in the bed for hours snacking and watching CMT and GAC music videos. Those were the good old days. :)

  9. Funny-friends and I were just talking about this. MTV need to have their own reality channel...then show videos once more! It makes the treadmil much more bareable!

  12. oh, when the music video was going strong.

i was a huge mariah fan in the early 90s (ahem...still am). her album "music box" was the first tape i ever owned!

in 2nd grade, i loved jammin out to "dreamlover" and "hero" pumping on my teal boombox in my room. i held a hairbrush as a mic, tried her riffs, and even did her hand movements with the high notes. oh yeah. i went all out.

wait, maybe that wasn't 2nd grade. i think that was yesterday. :)

  15. So the town I grew up in didn't have MTV. Like it wasn't even an option because it would "poison our minds." Not kidding. However, we DID have radio and I was going to say "King of Wishful Thinking" was one of my favs but then just saw someone comment about Ace of Base "I Saw the Sign" and that might take the cake!!

  16. ohhh TGIF! i remember that! the lineup-- family matters, step by step... what else? mr cooper for a time... and full house even, right???

  17. Ah, the 90's. My sis and I thought we were so awesome listening to Alanis Morisette, even though I'm sure we didn't understand the lyrics...

And who can forget Blind Melon's, "No Rain" featuring the Little Bee Girl. That video was classic. How sad that my kids will not have something like that to laugh about into their 30's like me and my hubby do.

  20. I miss coming home from school everyday and watching Carson Daly host TRL, believing that if *NSYNC missed the #1 spot, it was a total tragedy.

  22. Ha, isn't that the truth? I don't know that the acronym MTV works anymore. Perhaps they should switch it up to RTV..reality tv is all they do
